Collaboration with Dairy Farms

Our process begins with a strong partnership with several local dairy farms. These farms are integral to our operation, as they provide healthy calves, typically around two weeks old. The dairy farm cares for the calves, prioritising the well-being of each calf, setting the stage for a smooth transition to our farm.

Early Care and Transition

Once the calves arrive at the estate, they are placed on a specially designed milk machine. This milk replacer mimics the nutritional profile of natural cow's milk, ensuring that the calves receive the essential nutrients for healthy growth and development. The calves are kept in an environment where they can thrive, and our dedicated team closely monitors their health and progress.

Feeding Regimen

Our feeding regimen is tailored to meet the nutritional needs of growing Aberdeen Angus calves. Initially, they receive a diet rich in protein and energy through the milk machine. We gradually introduce high-quality forage and concentrates to support their development as they grow. This balanced diet is crucial for building strong, healthy animals to excel in their growth and later production phases.

Health Management

Health and welfare are our top priorities. We implement a rigorous health management program that includes regular veterinary check-ups, including calf scoring and vaccination protocols. Our team is trained to recognise early signs of illness and promptly address any health issues. This proactive approach allows us to maintain a healthy herd and produce high-quality beef.

Growth Monitoring

We closely monitor our calves' growth rates to ensure they meet industry standards. This monitoring allows us to make any necessary adjustments to their diet and care. Our goal is to rear robust and well-conditioned cattle that will meet the demands of the beef market.

Commitment To Sustainbility

At the estate, we are committed to sustainable farming practices. We strive to minimise our environmental impact by utilising efficient feeding practices and optimising land use. Our focus on sustainability benefits our farm and contributes to the health of the environment.

Rearing of Aberdeen Angus Cattle

At Barelands, we take pride in our commitment to the highest animal husbandry standards, particularly when rearing our Aberdeen Angus cattle. Each year, we care for around 1,200 beef calves, ensuring they receive the best possible start in life. We are also proud to be Red Tractor Assured, guaranteeing that our farming practices meet rigorous standards for food safety, animal welfare, and environmental protection.

The rearing of Aberdeen Angus cattle at Barelands is a labour of love that involves careful planning, collaboration, and dedication to animal welfare.
Our Red Tractor Assurance status shows our commitment to high-quality farming practices. We believe that by starting with the best practices in calf rearing, we can produce high-quality beef that meets our customers' expectations and contributes to a sustainable agricultural future.
